Job Description

Job Summary

The Communications Officer will lead BAMA’s content creation, digital storytelling, and brand visibility across Uganda and globally, in close collaboration with BAMA USA. This role requires strong writing skills, creativity, and the ability to translate field work into compelling stories, reports, social media content, and website updates.

The officer will collaborate with program teams, leadership, and external partners to ensure BAMA’s work is communicated accurately, ethically, beautifully, and consistently. While photo and video editing are required, professional filming may be outsourced when required.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

  • Content Development and Storytelling
    • Write clear, engaging, and accurate content for newsletters, website, social media, donor reports, and campaigns.
    • Produce high-quality success stories, case studies, compelling human-interest stories, and field updates from all program areas.
    • Conduct interviews with program beneficiaries and key stakeholders, including mothers, midwives, district leaders, and staff, to generate compelling stories.
    • Ensure all content aligns with BAMA’s ethical storytelling, safeguarding, and informed consent guidelines.
    • Together with program staff, compile, write, and disseminate communication products such as technical briefs, brochures, infographics, one-pagers, presentations, policy briefs, blogs, stories, reports, and social media content.
    • Maintain a secure, well-organized digital library for communications assets, including photos, videos, publications, and signed consent/release forms, among others.
  • Social Media Management
    • Plan and create strong content across all BAMA’s platforms (Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, YouTube).
    • Monitor engagement, respond to messages, and grow BAMA’s digital presence.
    • Produce simple short-form videos (Reels, TikToks-style clips, behind-the-scenes footage) using a phone or camera.
    • Track analytics and prepare monthly social media performance dashboards.
  • Photography and Video Capture
    • Capture high-quality photos and short videos during field visits, events, and trainings.
    • Edit and curate photos for campaigns, reports, and digital media.
    • Produce simple video edits (1–3 minutes) for social media, donor updates, and website use.
    • Coordinate external professional videographers, photographers, or media consultants when needed.
  • Website Management
    • Together with BAMA USA counterparts, update and maintain the BAMA website.
    • Upload blog posts, new stories, photos, and campaign pages.
    • Ensure website content is accurate, visually appealing, and up to date.
    • Coordinate with external developers when technical changes are required.
  • Donor Reporting and Documentation
    • Fully understand donor communications and outreach strategies and expected program contributions.
    • Work with key program staff to support the development of monthly, quarterly, and annual donor reports through writing, layout, and visual documentation.
    • Lead the coordination of periodic donor progress reports, including timeline development, content collection, and submission tracking.
  • Internal and External Coordination
    • Work closely with program teams to collect accurate information from field sites and visual updates.
    • Liaise with district partners, facility staff, and international donors when content is needed.
    • Support coordination and visibility at events, conferences, and trainings (photography, banners, social media, live updates).
    • Uphold clear brand guidelines across all materials.
    • Track relevant international, regional, and national conferences and support program staff to develop abstracts and visibility materials.
    • Help internal team with presentations and branding where needed.
    • Get BAMA into public media (PR).
    • Advise senior leadership on strategic communication opportunities to enhance BAMA’s visibility and influence.
    • Carry out other tasks as assigned by the supervisor.

Educational Qualifications, Experience, & Skills Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Journalism, Marketing, Public Relations, Development Studies, or related field.
  • Five to seven years of experience working in a communications role
  • Proven experience in content writing, storytelling, and social media management.
  • Strong photography and video editing skills.
  • Proficiency with digital tools (Canva, InDesign, Adobe tools, CapCut, Veed.io, or similar systems).
  • Excellent communication skills (written and verbal) in English, Luganda, and other local languages.
  • Ability to conceptualize, write, and edit technical content
  • Ability to work independently, meet deadlines, and manage multiple tasks.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and cultural sensitivity when working in rural communities.
  • Experience working in the NGO sector or on public health or community development programs.
  • Based in Masaka, willingness to travel regularly to field locations in Greater Masaka, Rwenzori, and Busoga regions.
